What a Vertical Garden Actually Costs in India

The cost structure of a green wall — build versus five-year maintenance, what drives the number up, why access is the hidden multiplier, and when a green facade is the better buy.

Green walls are quoted per square foot, which is exactly the wrong unit — because the plants are the cheapest component and the square footage tells you almost nothing about what the job requires. Two 1,000 sq ft walls can differ by a multiple depending on where they are, what they hang off, and how somebody reaches them in year three.

This is what actually determines the number.

The five cost drivers, in order

1. Access. The single biggest multiplier. A wall reachable from the ground, or from a walkway, is a normal maintenance visit. A flyover soffit or a station facade needs a boom lift, a permit, traffic management and a crew working within a fixed window — every visit, forever. Access does not just raise the install cost; it multiplies every one of the twelve to twenty maintenance visits a year for the life of the wall.

2. Structure. Saturated system weight runs roughly 50–120 kg per square metre depending on the system. On a new build that is a line in the design. On an existing flyover, wall or facade it means load assessment, fixing design, waterproofing interface and structural sign-off before anything is planted. That engineering is often a bigger line than the planting.

3. Irrigation. The system that keeps the wall alive: zoned drip, filtration, dosing, dual pumps with automatic changeover, flow monitoring and a manual bypass. Every one of those is optional right up until the day the pump fails in May and the wall dies in seventy-two hours. Redundancy is cheap relative to replanting.

4. System type. Modular tray systems, felt hydroponic systems and planter-stack systems differ in cost, media volume, replaceability and lifespan. Cheaper systems generally carry less media, which means less buffer, which means more dependence on irrigation being perfect.

5. Plants. Genuinely the smallest line, at 25–36 plants per square metre of species that mostly propagate from cuttings. Anyone whose quote is dominated by plant cost has priced the wrong things.

Build cost versus the five-year number

The mistake that wrecks green wall budgets is treating installation as the cost and maintenance as an afterthought.

On an exterior wall with constrained access, five years of maintenance can approach or exceed the build cost. That is not a failure of the system; it is what the system requires. Maintenance covers:

  • Scheduled visits — fortnightly to monthly in year one, monthly after
  • Irrigation servicing: filter cleaning, emitter flushing, pump maintenance, quarterly deep service
  • Replacement planting and media top-up
  • Access equipment for every visit on a high wall

Ask for build and five-year maintenance as one figure. A supplier who will not quote the maintenance is telling you something.

What reduces the cost honestly

  • Choose species that regrow from a hard cut-back. Syngonium, money plant, rhoeo and spider plant resprout from a stub, so maintenance is a trim rather than a module swap. This changes the maintenance economy more than any other decision.
  • Propagate on site. A mature wall of spider plant and syngonium produces its own replacement stock. Over five years that is a real saving.
  • Zone by measured light, not by pattern. Species placed where they cannot survive become a permanent replacement line item.
  • Keep ferns proportionate. Ferns look superb and are the first thing to die on a dry exterior wall. A small proportion is texture; a large proportion is an annual replanting contract.
  • Design access at concept stage. A walkway or platform designed in costs a fraction of a boom lift hired twenty times a year for a decade.
  • Simplify the pattern. Intricate multi-species patterns need precise replacement to stay legible. Broad bands tolerate imperfection.

When you should not build one

Sometimes the right advice is a different product:

  • No committed maintenance budget beyond installation — the wall will be brown within eighteen months and the money is simply lost.
  • No practical maintenance access and no budget for equipment.
  • Unreliable or very hard water with no treatment — emitters block, salts accumulate, and the wall degrades from the irrigation outward.
  • Full west-facing exposure on a tight budget in a hot dry city.

In those cases a green facade — climbers rooted in the ground on a trellis or cable system — delivers much of the visual intent at a fraction of the cost and risk. It is slower and less controllable, but it does not die in a week when a pump fails. Recommending it over a modular wall is better practice than building something that will fail.

What we have built

GNIX has developed and maintains roughly 34,000 sq ft of vertical garden on live public infrastructure — 24,000 sq ft across three flyovers in Jalandhar under Jalandhar Smart City, and 10,000 sq ft on four DMRC metro stations in Noida under the Noida Industrial Development Authority. Both are the difficult category: exposed, high-traffic, access-constrained, and running through Punjab and NCR temperature extremes.

The lesson from both is the same. The engineering and the maintenance contract determine whether a green wall exists in year three. The plants are the easy part.

For a realistic figure on a specific wall, send the elevation, the orientation and the access situation — those three determine most of the number.
