Tree transplantation succeeds or fails months before the crane arrives. A tree that has had its root ball prepared and been allowed to grow feeder roots inside that ball has a strong chance; a tree dug and lifted in one day has a poor one, regardless of how carefully it is replanted.

On road widening, metro corridors and site redevelopment, translocation is increasingly required by authorities rather than merely preferred, and mature peepal, banyan and other protected species are usually the trees in question. Ficus species happen to be the most transplantable large trees in India, which is fortunate, because they are also the ones the public most objects to losing.
