Flowering shrub

Bougainvillea

The hardest-working colour plant in India: months of bract colour on almost no water, provided you resist the urge to feed and irrigate it.

About Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea is the reason Indian flyovers have colour. It flowers on drought, heat and neglect, holds bract colour for weeks rather than days, and covers ground fast enough to suppress weeds on an embankment. On a median with a broken drip line and one maintenance visit a quarter, it is often the only thing still performing.

The care instructions are counter-intuitive, and getting them wrong is the usual failure. It flowers in response to stress: dry soil, poor nutrition, root restriction. Give it a rich bed and daily water and you get a vigorous green thicket with no colour at all. On projects, that means keeping bougainvillea off the lawn irrigation zone and on its own low-frequency line.

Pruning drives the display. Bracts form on new growth, so a hard cut back after each flush, followed by a dry spell, resets the plant for the next one. Two hard prunes a year — after monsoon and after the main spring flush — will keep a median mass tight, under sight-line height and repeatedly in colour.

Best used for

  • Highway medians, flyover planters and roundabouts
  • Slope and embankment cover where irrigation is unreliable
  • Compound walls, pergolas and screening on trellis
  • Any site where colour is required and water is not available

Do not use where

  • Pedestrian edges and school frontages without thornless cultivars — the thorns are serious
  • Irrigated lawn beds, where it grows lush and never flowers
  • Deep shade
Bougainvillea — specification summary
Botanical nameBougainvillea glabra / spectabilis
FamilyNyctaginaceae
Also calledPaper flower, Booganvel, Kagaz phool
Mature height1 m clipped, 3–4 m as a shrub, 8 m+ as a climber
Spread2–4 m
Growth rateFast
SunlightFull sun — six hours minimum, or it will not colour
Water needLow. Over-watering is the single commonest cause of a green, flowerless plant
SoilPoor, sharply drained, even gravelly. Rich soil produces leaves instead of bracts
ClimateAll of tropical and subtropical India; slows in cold but recovers
FloweringRepeat flushes almost year-round, heaviest in the dry months and after stress
Spacing1–1.5 m for median massing; 2–3 m for shrub form
Planting windowFebruary–March and July–September
Establishment3–4 months
MaintenanceModerate
Pollution toleranceVery high
Drought toleranceVery high
TransplantingPoor once established — the root system is brittle and resents disturbance. Plant it where it stays.

Care

Season-by-season care calendar

SeasonWhat to do
February–MarchHard prune after the winter flush. Cut back to a framework; do not be timid. Withhold water for two weeks after pruning to trigger the next flush.
April–JunePeak performance season. Water sparingly — deep, infrequent, and only if plants wilt at dawn rather than at noon.
July–SeptemberGrowth is vegetative and flowering pauses. Prune to control spread and keep the mass off the carriageway. Do not fertilise with nitrogen.
October–JanuarySecond major flush. Light shaping only; a phosphorus-heavy feed at low rate can strengthen bract colour.

Troubleshooting

Common problems and what causes them

SymptomCauseFix
Lush green growth, no flowersToo much water, too much nitrogen, or bothCut irrigation frequency by half, stop nitrogen entirely, prune hard and let the plant dry. Colour returns within four to six weeks.
Thorn injuries during maintenanceSpecies characteristic on most cultivarsGauntlets and eye protection for crews as standard. On public edges, specify low-thorn cultivars or set the mass back 600 mm from the kerb.
Mass sprawling into the carriagewayFast growth plus infrequent pruning cyclesTwo hard prunes a year minimum in the maintenance contract; four for high-visibility urban medians.

Bougainvillea — frequently asked questions

Why is my bougainvillea not flowering?

Nine times out of ten: too much water and too much nitrogen. It flowers under mild stress. Move it off the lawn irrigation line, stop feeding, prune hard, then let it dry out.

Is bougainvillea good for highway medians?

It is arguably the best median shrub in India — extreme drought tolerance, months of colour, high pollution tolerance and rapid cover. Budget for two hard prunes a year to hold it under sight-line height.

How often should bougainvillea be watered?

Once established, once every 7–10 days in summer and not at all in monsoon. Frequent shallow watering is the most common mistake.
