Median planting is the most constrained landscape situation in India. The bed is narrow, the soil beneath it is compacted subgrade rather than earth, the plants sit in reflected heat between two carriageways, they are coated in road dust for eight months of the year, and every maintenance visit needs traffic management. Species that thrive in a campus bed 200 metres away will die here.
Yet medians are also the most visible planting on any road project. They are what the client, the authority and the public actually see. Getting the species right is therefore worth more attention than the drawing usually gives it.
Start with the width, not the plant list
Median width is the first filter, and it eliminates most arguments before they start.

The soil volume qualifier matters more than the surface width. A 3 m median formed of compacted fill with 300 mm of topsoil dressing will not support a canopy tree, no matter what the drawing says. If trees are required, the median has to be built for them — subgrade broken, backfill imported, drainage provided — and that is a civil decision taken long before planting.
The sight-line rule that governs everything
Median vegetation must not obstruct driver visibility across the median at gaps, U-turns, intersections and on the inside of curves. In practice this means shrub massing is held at 1.0–1.2 m and never allowed to exceed it.
That single constraint should drive species choice more than colour or texture. A shrub that reaches 1.2 m and stops is manageable. A shrub that reaches 3 m and must be cut back four times a year to stay at 1.2 m is a permanent maintenance liability, and on a corridor where maintenance is funded once or twice a year, it becomes a safety issue.
Trees on medians must be maintained with a clear stem well above the vehicle envelope — 5 m over carriageways is a sensible working figure — and must sit outside the sight triangles at every opening.
The four conditions a median plant must survive
- Drought. Assume the irrigation will fail. Any species that cannot survive two weeks without water in May will eventually be a gap in the row.
- Dust. Continuous traffic deposits a film that suppresses photosynthesis and invites sap-feeding pests. Glossy or waxy foliage handles this better than soft matte leaves.
- Restricted root volume. Roots hit compacted subgrade quickly. Plants with modest root demands outperform vigorous species that get root-bound and stall.
- Reflected heat. Surface temperatures between two carriageways run far above ambient. Species from hot open habitats do well; understorey species do not.
The reliable Indian median palette
Shrub layer — the workhorses
- Oleander is the most dependable median shrub in India: flowering for roughly nine months, indifferent to drought and dust, holds 1.0–1.2 m with two cuts a year. It is toxic in all parts, which is fine on a fenced expressway median and wrong outside a school.
- Bougainvillea gives the strongest colour in the palette and flowers harder under stress. It needs two hard prunes a year to stay off the carriageway, and it must be kept off any irrigation line intended for thirstier planting.
- Tecoma stans supplies yellow, establishes in a single season, and needs an annual hard cut or it goes woody and bare at the base.
Ground layer
- Portulaca flowers hardest in peak summer heat on almost no water. Treat it as a seasonal planting replaced after monsoon rather than permanent cover.
- Rhoeo gives durable non-flowering cover in shade and sun and tolerates dust well.
Vertical accent
- Silver date palm is the safest formal palm for medians in North and West India — native, drought-proof, cold-hardy and transplantable at large sizes. Keep the spiny lower fronds away from pedestrian edges.
- Washingtonia delivers fast height cheaply on wide medians and toll plaza islands, with an annual trim built into the contract.
Slopes and embankments alongside the median
- Vetiver hedgerows along the contour stop erosion biologically. Slips at 100–150 mm centres, planted with the monsoon.
Planting densities that actually close
Median beds look sparse for their first season and clients notice. Reasonable working densities:

Planting tighter than this to satisfy an inspection wastes material — the plants compete and thin out from the base within two years.
Sequence the colour, don't average it
A common failing is a median that is uniformly mediocre all year. Better practice is to sequence species so something is in flower during the months the corridor matters most — typically the dry months when everything else in the landscape is brown. Bougainvillea and oleander cover most of the year, portulaca carries April to June, and tecoma fills the gaps.
What the maintenance contract must fund
Every species choice is a commitment to a cycle. Before signing off a median palette, price it:
- Oleander and tecoma: two hard cuts a year minimum.
- Bougainvillea: two hard prunes, four on urban corridors.
- Groundcover: seasonal replanting after monsoon.
- Palms: one crown clean a year; Washingtonia needs a boom lift once it exceeds 6 m.
- Irrigation: pre-summer full inspection and monthly checks if a drip system exists.
If the maintenance budget cannot fund that cycle, simplify the palette until it can. A simple median maintained properly always looks better than an ambitious one maintained occasionally.
Common mistakes
- Specifying campus plants on a corridor. Ixora, hibiscus and ferns fail on medians. They have no drought reserve.
- Ignoring the clear zone. Trees planted inside the clear zone for a design speed are a safety issue, not a landscape feature.
- Uniform palette over 100 km. Soil, salinity and rainfall change along an alignment. The species should change with them.
- Planting outside the monsoon. A median planted in April with tanker irrigation will lose plants that a July planting would have kept.
- No edge restraint. Groundcover and grass spread into the carriageway shoulder and become a permanent weeding cost.
The short version: choose for survival under neglect, hold everything under 1.2 m, plant with the rain, and fund the cuts.
