Context

The Eastern Peripheral Expressway runs as a long ring corridor around Delhi, largely through agricultural and peri-urban land. Unlike an urban arterial, most of its length is far from any reliable water source, and maintenance visits are necessarily less frequent because the corridor is long and access points are widely spaced.

That profile changes the specification entirely: the plants must survive on rainfall after establishment, and they must look acceptable between infrequent maintenance cycles.

What made this difficult

Water availability along a long rural corridor

No continuous irrigation infrastructure over most chainages; establishment depends on tanker logistics and monsoon timing.

Low maintenance frequency

A species that needs quarterly shaping will be cut annually in practice. The palette has to look intentional in between.

Exposed embankments

Long fill sections erode under monsoon runoff before woody planting can establish.

Approach

How we handled it

  1. Monsoon-window planting programmeTree planting concentrated in the June–September window so that establishment ran on natural rainfall rather than on tanker capacity.
  2. Drought-independent species selectionNeem and karanj on the verges, oleander and bougainvillea on medians — all species that survive on rainfall after their second summer.
  3. Vetiver-based slope treatmentContour hedgerows on erosion-prone embankment sections to slow sheet flow and trap silt biologically instead of repairing slopes repeatedly.

Outcome

What the project delivered

  • Plantation designed to survive independent of an irrigation network that does not exist along most of the alignment
  • Erosion managed with bioengineering rather than repeat civil repair
