Lawn and groundcover
The engineering plant of Indian landscapes: a deep-rooted clumping grass that holds embankments, filters runoff and stops erosion where nothing else will grow.
Vetiver is less a landscape plant than a piece of soft engineering. Its roots go down two to three metres, vertically rather than laterally, forming a living wall that holds soil against monsoon runoff. On highway embankments it does the work of expensive armouring at a fraction of the cost, and it improves rather than degrades over time.
Planted as a closely spaced single row along the contour, the clumps merge into a hedge that slows sheet flow, drops silt on the upslope side and gradually terraces the slope. On a corridor with erosion-prone chainages, two or three vetiver hedgerows will usually cost less than one repair cycle of the same slope.
It also tolerates conditions that kill everything else — salinity, acidity, heavy metals, drought and inundation — which is why it is standard on reclamation and landfill sites. Specify a sterile cultivar so it cannot seed into surrounding habitat.

Its roots grow two to three metres straight down, binding the soil profile, while the dense clump above ground slows sheet flow and traps silt. Rows planted along the contour terrace a slope over a few seasons.
