The Indian monsoon is the single largest free input available to a plantation project. Ten to twelve weeks of natural irrigation, arriving when soil temperatures are ideal for root growth, is worth more than any specification refinement. Programmes that use it well finish with high survival at reasonable cost. Programmes that miss it spend the difference on tankers, and usually still lose plants.
The planning problem is that the window is short, it moves, and most of the work that determines whether you can use it has to happen before it starts.
Regional windows
The "Indian monsoon" is not one event. The planning calendar differs materially by region, and a corridor package that spans states may need two different schedules.

The Tamil Nadu inversion catches out national contractors regularly. A programme built on a North Indian calendar will plant into the driest part of the Tamil year.
What has to be finished before the first rain
The monsoon window is for planting, not for earthwork. Anything you are still doing in July is time taken from establishment.
Six to eight weeks before:
- Soil investigation completed and species mapped to conditions by zone or chainage.
- Nursery stock inspected, tagged and reserved. Good stock is scarce in July because everyone wants it at once.
- Pit excavation programmed and started, including any rock breaking.
Two to four weeks before:
- Pits excavated, sides scarified, drainage provided where soils are heavy.
- Backfill mix prepared — excavated soil plus organic matter — and stockpiled.
- Stakes, ties, tree guards and mulch delivered to site.
- Irrigation first fix installed where a system exists.
At first reliable rain:
- Plant. Do not wait for the "proper" monsoon if a reliable spell has arrived and the forecast supports it.
Sequence within the window
Order the planting so that the highest-risk material goes in earliest, when the most rain remains:
- Trees and palms first. They need the longest establishment and are the most expensive to replace.
- Vetiver and slope work next. Embankments need cover before the heaviest runoff, and vetiver establishes in weeks.
- Shrub massing. Faster establishment, more tolerant of a later start.
- Groundcover and turf last. These knit quickly and can run into September.
Planting trees in the final fortnight of the monsoon is a common programming error. They get two weeks of rain and then eight months of dry season with a root system still inside the original ball.
The three things monsoon planting still requires
Rain is not a substitute for the rest of the method.
Drainage. More monsoon-planted trees are lost to waterlogging than to drought. A pit in clay that fills and does not drain becomes a bowl. Test-fill one pit per zone; if water stands for 24 hours, provide an outlet before planting anything.
Staking. Saturated soil plus monsoon wind rocks new plantings badly and tears developing roots. Every tree needs support on the day it is planted, and ties need checking after each major storm.
Weeding. Weeds grow faster than your plants in the same rain, and they take the water and nutrients first. Basins need clearing through the season, and mulch pays for itself here.
What to do when the programme slips
Slippage is normal. The wrong response is to plant the same quantity later and report the same numbers.
Better options, roughly in order:
- Split the programme. Plant what you can in the remaining window and defer the rest to the second window or the next year. A deferred planting that survives beats an on-time planting that dies.
- Shift the species mix. Hardy species — neem, karanj, silver date palm, vetiver, oleander, bougainvillea — tolerate a late or dry-season start far better than moisture-dependent ones.
- Increase plant size selectively. Larger stock has more reserve, though it also has more transpiring canopy; this helps only if irrigation is genuinely funded.
- Price the water honestly. If planting proceeds outside the window, the establishment irrigation is not a contingency — it is a line item for two summers.
Post-monsoon: the part nobody plans
The most dangerous period for a monsoon planting is not the monsoon. It is the following March to June, when the plant is still dependent and the rain has been gone for months.
A monsoon-planted tree needs:
- First summer: weekly deep irrigation, mulch maintained, basins intact.
- Second monsoon: minimal intervention, weeding and gap-filling.
- Second summer: fortnightly irrigation, reducing as the season progresses.
- After that: independent for hardy species; ornamental species remain on irrigation permanently.
Projects that budget maintenance for twelve months from planting stop watering exactly one month before the hardest test of the plant's life. Eighteen to twenty-four months is the honest figure.
A simple planning checklist
- Species mapped to soil and rainfall by zone, not one palette everywhere.
- Nursery stock inspected and reserved by April.
- Pits complete before the rain, with drainage tested in heavy soils.
- Planting sequenced trees first, groundcover last.
- Staking, basins and mulch on the day of planting, not in a later cycle.
- Irrigation budgeted for two summers, on the assumption that the borewell does not exist.
- Gap-filling scheduled for the following monsoon, when replacements have the same advantage the originals had.
Used properly, the monsoon does most of the work. The planning is simply about being ready when it arrives.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to plant trees in India?
With the monsoon — June to September in most of the country, and again in October and November in the peninsular states that receive north-east monsoon rain. Planting then gives roots two to three months of natural irrigation before the dry season arrives.
Can trees be planted in summer in India?
They can, but survival depends entirely on irrigation, and the cost of carrying plants through April to June by tanker usually exceeds the cost of waiting. If summer planting is unavoidable, reduce quantities, increase plant size, and budget the water properly.
How long before the monsoon should site preparation start?
