Tree transplantation has become routine on Indian infrastructure projects, partly because authorities increasingly require it and partly because felling a mature peepal or banyan generates public objection that can stop a site. It is also routinely done badly: a tree is dug on Monday, lifted on Tuesday, planted on Wednesday and reported as translocated. Six months later it is a dead stem in a new location, and the project has met the letter of its obligation and none of the purpose.
Done properly, translocation works — and for ficus species it works reliably. The difference is almost entirely in the preparation and aftercare, not in the lifting.
Decide which trees are worth moving
Not every tree should be moved, and an honest assessment early saves money and credibility.
Good candidates
- Ficus species — peepal, banyan, pilkhan, ficus panda. They root from stems, regenerate aggressively and tolerate severe root loss.
- Most palms. Their root systems regenerate from the base rather than depending on cut roots, so survival is high with correct handling.
- Young to middle-aged trees of most species — the smaller the tree, the better the odds.
Poor candidates
- Mature deep-taprooted species — a large neem or mahua loses the taproot in lifting and rarely recovers.
- Brittle-wooded fast growers such as gulmohar, which split during handling.
- Trees already in poor health, with decay, cavities or significant deadwood. Moving a declining tree accelerates its decline.
- Trees where the receiving site is materially worse than the current one.
The method, stage by stage
Stage 1 — Survey and tagging (before anything else)
Number, measure and photograph every tree. Record species, girth at breast height, height, canopy spread, health and any structural defects. This record is what the authority audits later, and it is also how you prove survival afterwards.
Stage 2 — Root-ball preparation (8–12 weeks before)
This is the step that determines the outcome.
- Mark the root-ball circle: roughly 8–10 times trunk diameter.
- Excavate a trench outside that circle, cutting roots cleanly at the boundary rather than tearing them.
- Backfill the trench with a light, moisture-retentive mix.
- Irrigate regularly through the preparation period.
Inside that boundary the tree responds by producing a dense mat of fine feeder roots — the roots that will actually keep it alive after the move. Skipping this stage means lifting a ball full of severed structural roots and almost no absorptive capacity.
Stage 3 — Crown reduction (at or just before lifting)
Reduce the canopy by roughly 30–50% in proportion to root loss. This is not topping. Use proper reduction cuts back to lateral branches, retain the tree's form, and remove deadwood at the same time.
The purpose is twofold: cut transpiration demand to something the reduced root system can supply, and reduce wind load on a tree that will be unstable for a year.
Stage 4 — Lifting and transport
- Wrap the ball in hessian, netting or a fabricated steel or timber crate. The ball must not crack; a broken ball loses the feeder roots you spent three months growing.
- Keep it moist throughout — cover, irrigate before lifting, and shade the ball in transit.
- Lift from the ball, never by the trunk alone, using padded slings.
- Plan the route for height, width and weight. A 2 m girth ficus with its ball is a serious load requiring crane and traffic coordination.
- Move same-day wherever possible. If storage is unavoidable, heel the ball into moist soil or mulch and irrigate.
Stage 5 — Replanting
The receiving pit must be ready before the tree arrives.
- Pit 1.5 times ball diameter, with scarified sides and a drainage layer or outlet in heavy soil.
- Set the tree at the same depth it grew at — the commonest replanting error is burying the root collar.
- Orient it as before where practical; the sun-exposed side has adapted bark.
- Backfill in 300 mm layers with improved soil, consolidating with water rather than compacting mechanically.
- Form a generous basin and mulch to 100 mm.
- Support rigidly with three guys or a tripod brace for at least 12 months.
Stage 6 — Aftercare (12 months, non-negotiable)
- Irrigation: deep and frequent for the first three months, then tapering. The ball dries faster than surrounding soil, so water into the ball, not just around it.
- Anti-transpirant application can help in the first weeks on species with large leaf area.
- Nutrition: light, balanced feeding once new growth appears — not before, since fertiliser on a stressed root system does more harm than good.
- Monitoring: monthly inspection for pest attack on stressed tissue, support adjustment and irrigation performance.
- Reporting: survival status at fixed intervals, with photographs.
Timing
The best windows are the monsoon and the cool dormant season. Monsoon moves benefit from natural irrigation and high humidity; cool-season moves benefit from low transpiration demand.
The worst time in North India is April to May — maximum transpiration, minimum recovery capacity, and soil temperatures that stress the ball. Where a move must happen then, increase crown reduction, shade the tree and plan an intensive irrigation regime.
What realistic survival looks like
Published survival claims for translocation vary from 20% to 95%, which tells you the figures depend almost entirely on method rather than on the concept.
Broadly:
- Ficus species, prepared and aftercared properly: consistently high survival.
- Palms, handled correctly: high survival; among the easiest large plants to move.
- Other broadleaf species, prepared properly: moderate to good, species-dependent.
- Any species, emergency same-day move in summer with no aftercare: poor, and predictably so.
The honest position on a tender is to state the method and the expected survival for the species involved, rather than quoting a headline number that assumes ideal conditions.
Common failures
- No preparation period. The dominant cause. A ball with no feeder roots is a stump with soil around it.
- Ball cracked in handling. Undoes the preparation entirely.
- Planted too deep. Kills slowly and is nearly impossible to correct later.
- Aftercare ends at three months. The second summer is the real test.
- Receiving site worse than the original. Moving a healthy tree into compacted fill with no drainage is a slow execution.
The wider point
On road widening and metro corridors, translocation is often the difference between a project that proceeds and one that stalls in objection. That makes it worth doing properly — with a documented method, a preparation period in the programme, and a year of aftercare in the budget. Treated as a box to tick, it produces dead trees and a credibility problem that outlasts the project.
