Avenue tree
A vast, long-lived sacred fig with unmatched canopy and biodiversity value — and roots aggressive enough that placement is a structural decision, not a landscape one.
Ficus religiosa is the largest, longest-lived and most ecologically productive tree in the common Indian palette, and the one that causes the most infrastructure damage when planted carelessly. Both things are true at once, and a good specification treats them as a siting question rather than a species question.
Given open ground it is superb: a canopy that shades a quarter-acre, figs that feed birds and bats almost year-round, a life measured in centuries, and cultural weight that makes it politically protected in a way no other species is. On road-widening projects, peepal and banyan are the trees that stop work and generate public objection — which is exactly why they are also the trees most often translocated rather than felled.
The roots are the problem. They are aggressive, opportunistic and capable of splitting masonry and entering drains. Seedlings germinate in wall cracks and become structural liabilities. Never plant peepal near built fabric, and inspect boundary walls annually on any campus where mature specimens already exist.

Yes — ficus species are the most successfully translocated large trees in India. Success depends on root-ball preparation two to three months ahead, hard crown reduction, monsoon timing and a full year of irrigation and support.
