Tree transplantation is priced badly across the industry, in both directions. Some quotes are far too low because they omit the two stages that determine whether the tree lives. Others are high because the contractor is pricing risk they cannot quantify. Understanding the cost structure lets you tell the two apart.
What the cost actually scales with
1. Girth, and therefore root-ball size. Root-ball diameter runs roughly eight to ten times trunk diameter. Because volume scales cubically, a tree twice the girth is not twice the job — the ball can be several times the weight. Girth is the first number any estimate hangs on.
2. Access at both ends. Can a crane reach the tree? Can it reach the receiving pit? Is the route wide enough, and is there overhead clearance for the canopy in transit? A tree in an open verge and a tree between a compound wall and a live carriageway are entirely different operations at identical girth.
3. Equipment hours. Excavator for the ball, crane or hydra for the lift, trailer for transport, plus traffic management on a live road. Equipment is usually the single largest line, and it is billed by time — so anything that slows the operation, including a poorly prepared receiving pit, costs money directly.
4. Preparation. Root-ball trenching eight to twelve weeks in advance, root pruning, pre-conditioning irrigation, and proportionate crown reduction. Modest cost, decisive effect.
5. Receiving-site works. Pit excavation at 1.5 times ball diameter, drainage in heavy soil, imported backfill, and rigid support. If the receiving site is compacted fill with no drainage, you are paying to move a tree into a bucket.
6. Twelve months of aftercare. Scheduled irrigation into the ball, support adjustment, pest monitoring and survival reporting. This is where the survival rate is actually bought.
The two stages cheap quotes leave out
A same-day dig-and-drop looks dramatically cheaper because it deletes:
- The preparation window. Trenching the ball in advance triggers fine feeder-root growth inside it. Those roots are what keep the tree alive after lifting. Without them you are moving a stump with soil around it.
- The aftercare year. The ball dries faster than surrounding soil. A tree that gets three months of attention and then nothing usually fails in its first summer.
Both are cheap relative to the crane hours. Both are the difference between a translocated tree and an expensive way to kill one.
Species changes the risk, not the price
Cost is driven by size and access. Survival is driven by species:
- Ficus — peepal, banyan, pilkhan: the most reliably transplantable large trees in India. They regenerate aggressively and tolerate severe root loss.
- Palms — royal, date and most others: excellent survival, and their root systems regenerate from the base rather than depending on cut roots.
- Deep-taprooted species — mature neem, mahua and similar: materially riskier, because the taproot is lost in lifting.
- Brittle fast growers — gulmohar and relatives: prone to splitting during handling.
This matters commercially: a contractor quoting the same survival commitment for a mature neem and a peepal of equal girth either does not know the difference or is not intending to honour it.
Timing changes the cost too
Moving in the monsoon or the cool dormant season gives natural irrigation and low transpiration demand, which reduces aftercare intensity and improves survival. An April or May move in North India needs harder crown reduction, shading and a much more intensive irrigation regime — real additional cost, on top of the worse odds.
If the programme allows it, moving in the right window is one of the few genuinely free savings available.

The case for doing it properly
On road widening and metro corridors, mature peepal and banyan are the trees that generate public objection and stop work. Translocation is frequently the difference between a site that proceeds and one that does not, and authorities increasingly require it with documented survival.
Against that, the marginal cost of the preparation window and the aftercare year is small — and it is the entire difference between a compliance record that stands up to audit and a row of dead stems that has to be answered for.
If you have trees to move, send girth, species, photographs and the access situation at both ends. Those four determine most of the estimate, and the honest answer for some trees is that they should not be moved at all.

How much does it cost to transplant a tree in India?
It scales with girth and access far more than with species. A young roadside tree moved by a small crew is a fraction of the cost of a 2 m girth peepal needing an excavator, a crane, traffic management and a year of aftercare. Any quote given without seeing the tree, the route and the receiving site is a guess.
Why are transplantation quotes so different from each other?
Because most low quotes exclude the two things that decide survival: the eight-to-twelve week root-ball preparation before lifting, and twelve months of aftercare afterwards. A same-day dig-and-drop is genuinely cheaper and usually produces a dead tree, which then has to be paid for again as compensatory planting.
Is transplanting cheaper than felling and replanting?
In pure cash terms, usually no. It is chosen because the tree is protected, because the authority requires it, or because public objection would stall the project. Measured against the cost of a stalled site, it is generally the cheaper option.
