About Royal Palm

Roystonea regia is specified more than any other palm on Indian infrastructure projects, and for a defensible reason: nothing else delivers the same vertical rhythm at the same speed. A row of royal palms at 6 m centres turns an ordinary approach road into a formal address within a single season, because you buy the effect at supply size rather than growing it.

The species is genuinely tough. It handles reflected heat off paving, urban air, brackish irrigation water within reason, and the compaction that comes with any live construction site. What it does not tolerate is standing water at the collar and mean, undersized pits. The most common failure on Indian sites is not climate — it is a 900 mm pit in a compacted subgrade with no drainage path, which drowns the palm in the second monsoon.

Budget for the frond. A mature royal palm sheds fronds three to four metres long weighing fifteen kilos or more, and it sheds them without warning. That single fact should decide whether the palm goes in a fenced median or beside a pedestrian queue, and it should put two crown-cleaning visits a year into the maintenance contract.

  • Narrow footpaths and bus queue areas — shed fronds are heavy enough to injure

  • Sites with no crane or hydra access, because supply size is the whole point of this palm
  • Waterlogged black cotton soil without engineered drainage

How much does a royal palm cost to plant on a project?

The palm itself is rarely the largest line. At boulevard sizes the controlling costs are transport, crane or hydra hours, pit excavation in hard subgrade, imported soil mix and 12 months of guying and aftercare. Ask any supplier to quote delivered-and-established, not just material.

How fast does a royal palm grow in India?

Roughly 300–600 mm of clear trunk a year once established, faster in the south and in irrigated soil. This is why avenue rows are bought at size — waiting for height means waiting a decade.

Can royal palms survive North Indian winters?

Yes. Delhi NCR winters cause occasional tip burn on the oldest fronds but do not kill established palms. Newly planted specimens are more vulnerable, so plant in spring rather than October and avoid late-season fertiliser.
