The native-versus-ornamental argument in Indian landscaping is usually conducted as an ideology and resolved as a compromise nobody planned. It is more useful as an engineering question: what does each category actually deliver, at what running cost, and where on the site does that trade-off make sense?
What native planting actually buys you
Lower water demand after establishment. A species adapted to 600 mm of rainfall in a 600 mm rainfall zone does not need supplementary irrigation once established. That is not a sustainability talking point; it is the difference between a landscape that survives a failed borewell and one that does not.
Insect and bird life at a different order of magnitude. Native trees host native insects, which feed native birds. A mature jamun row measurably changes the bird population of a campus within a few seasons. An equivalent row of an ornamental exotic supports a fraction of that.
Resilience to local pests and weather. Local species have evolved with the local pest complex and the local extremes. They fail less often and less spectacularly.
Longevity. Arjuna, peepal and jamun are century trees. Most ornamental favourites are not, and a landscape built on short-lived species needs rebuilding within a generation.
What ornamentals are genuinely for
Ornamentals are not decoration for its own sake. They deliver things natives often cannot:
- Predictable form and scale. A columnar ashoka screen or a clipped duranta edge gives a geometry no native alternative provides as reliably.
- Long flowering under stress. Bougainvillea and oleander flower for most of the year in conditions where native flowering species do not.
- Specific climate performance. Some exotics simply outperform in artificial conditions — reflected heat on medians, low-media green walls, dense urban courtyards.

- Accept smaller stock. Natives planted small with monsoon timing frequently overtake larger imported stock within three years, because they establish faster in local conditions.
- Use local seed sources where possible; provenance affects performance more than most specifications acknowledge.
- Build the demand. Authority and corporate specifications that consistently ask for native species change what nurseries grow.
The invasive species problem
Some of the most convenient plants in Indian landscaping are ecologically damaging outside a hard-edged site.
- Wedelia (Sphagneticola trilobata) — outstanding fast cover, listed as invasive across the tropics. Use only inside hard edges, never within 30 m of natural water or habitat, and dispose of clippings as green waste rather than into drains.
- Lantana camara — one of the most damaging invasives in Indian forests. Should not be planted at all.
- Prosopis juliflora — planted historically for wasteland reclamation, now a serious problem across arid India.
- Eichhornia crassipes (water hyacinth) — never introduce it to any water body.
- Tecoma stans — useful and hardy on medians, but seeds prolifically and behaves invasively in some regions. Keep it away from protected areas.
The rule is simple: the more ecologically sensitive the site interface, the more conservative the species list.
Designing for biodiversity, not just species count
Native planting alone does not create habitat. Structure does.
- Layers. Canopy, understorey, shrub and ground layer together support far more species than canopy over mown lawn.
- Fruiting and flowering across the calendar. Choose species so something is in fruit or flower in most months; the hungry gap matters more than peak abundance.
- Water. Even a small permanent water source transforms bird use of a site.
- Undisturbed edges. Leave some areas unmown and unswept. Leaf litter is habitat, not mess.
- Reduce chemical inputs. Broad-spectrum insecticide removes the insect base that everything else depends on.
Measuring it
If biodiversity is claimed in an ESG or accreditation submission, it should be measured:
- Tree inventory with species, girth and canopy cover.
- Native proportion by count and by canopy area.
- Bird species observations at fixed points and intervals.
- Canopy cover as a percentage of site area, tracked annually.
That data belongs in the green audit rather than in a separate exercise, and once the baseline exists the annual update is straightforward.
The practical summary
Use natives for the structural landscape — the trees, the screens, the slopes, the background — because that is where their resilience, longevity and ecological value pay off. Use ornamentals deliberately in the small proportion of the site where a specific effect is worth the maintenance. Avoid invasives entirely near any natural interface.
That is not a compromise between two positions. It is what a well-designed Indian landscape looks like.
